Graphic designers can really contribute to save energy and environment by reajusting their practices. 92% of paper we use comes from badly managed forests that are very often completely destroyed. By choosing a paper that comes from a sustainably managed forest or that is recycled. Graphic designers can contribute to a more eco-friendly society. Paper is a big issue because it is one of the main material of graphic designers for all kinds of works: posters, brochures, guides, packaging, flyers, etc... There are also tree-free papers made wih stone that exist, material preferable to use because not rare.
Also the choice of ink can be a factor of more or less polution. Classic petrolum inks are extremely toxic because they contain volatile components that pollute a lot when realesed in the air. A type of solvent and varnish are also very toxic and difficult to recycle. A good alternative is to use vegetable/water inks which are natural, and less toxic. Also with the progress of technique, they give exactly the same aspect as the classical ones.
Once a designers has choosen the appropriate materials to realise its projects, one thing that needs to be taken account is the printing matter. First of all, let's try to reduce the ink covering, and also try to fit the maximum of issues in a sheet of paper. Then, a sustainable eco-friendly printer is one that works with good paper, good ink, and that is near you area. Local is better because it saves, a lot of energy and all those little gestures mean a lot.
